Staff Spotlight: Meet David Hernandez, Education Abroad Program Assistant

David Hernandez • September 14, 2017

“David is one of those important spokes in our wheel that makes our education abroad programming so special. His impressive skills as a professional archaeological and ornithology guide with first aid and CPR training gives me that piece of mind that our students, faculty, and professionals are in good hands.” – Rhondine Petrof, CEO

I’ve been a tour guide for over 11 years, touring all over Belize and enjoying its beauty and learning about the cultures we have. I can say I have one of the best jobs in the world because I get to share Belize’s beauty with our visitors. We have a very important role as guides. Our main objective is to showcase our country by being great ambassadors.

I’ve worked with some amazing tour-operators in Western Belize and give my all to the job because of my passion for it. Belize is a growing country and by travelling I get to experience its culture and beauty. This helps me to showcase it to the best of my ability.

I strongly believe that we never stop learning. My background is in Environmental Science and basic Ornithology and Botany. Over the years I have taken courses that have allowed me to enhance my knowledge and skills.

This job has certainly made me go beyond my comfort zone. Spending the night in the jungle with no cell reception. Sleeping in a hammock and scouting dangerous routes for the sake of protecting the scarlet macaw, an endangered species. Therefore, I’ve learnt to appreciate life and to worry less about material things.

My passion for being a tour-guide grows every day and I believe that being ambitious is the key to success. Working with TEP, I can combine my love for being an ambassador of the Belizean culture with my love for working with people. The students and faculty that come through the program are always keen to learn and I learn so much from them as well.

I look forward to many more years working with the students and faculty that participate in TEP’s programs!
